1. Jeongeun Lee6 Wins 2019 U.S. Women’s Open
Jeongun Lee6 is a 23-year-old woman from South Korea who started off shaky only to come back strong to win by shooting a 1-under 70. She put a six after her name because she was the sixth Korean player billed on the Korean LPGA.
2. The Purse Was the Biggest for the LPGA so Far
The purse for winning the LPGA was one million dollars, and this is one of the largest purses thus far for the LPGA. Prior to this, the largest purse for an LPGA winner was $900,000. There is a $1.5 million purse prize coming up in November.
3. The LPGA Plays Around the World
Starting in January and running until November, there are a total of 33 tournaments sanctioned by the LPGA. The tournaments are in the United States, Scotland, Thailand, Singapore, France, England, Canada, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.
4. 2019 LPGA Spawns Several Multiple Winners
It’s the season for multiples, and there are now five multiple tournament winners in the 2019 LPGA. Hannah Green turned into the fifth multiple winner with her victory at Cambia. She follows Brooke Henderson with two wins, Jin Young Ko with four wins, Sei Young Kim with two wins, and Sung Hyun Park with two wins.
5. Two LGPA Legends Will Enter the Hall of Fame
In 2019, LPGA Founder Shirley Spork and LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam will enter the PGA Hall of Fame. This is significant because they’re only the fifth and sixth women to earn this honor.
6. A 12-Year-Old Make her LPGA Debut
At the Canadian Women’s Open, a 12-year-old by the name of Michelle Liu started to rave reviews. This makes her the youngest participant in the Canadian Women’s Open history.
7. First Players Cinch Their Spots for the Solheim Cup
The Solheim Cup is 24 players with 12 being from Europe and 12 being from the United States. Qualifying for these historic teams began two years ago, and the first players are just cinching their places now. The European team has seven players that are on their fourth appearance in this tournament, and the United States’ team has four with that much experience.
8. New LPGA Event Coming
There is a new official LPGA tour event coming to Boca Raton, Florida. In 2020, Boca Raton will play host to the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio. It’s a 108 player tournament with 72 holes of play with a $2 million purse.
9. Kordas Sisters Aim to Make History
In the Solheim Cup’s 29 years, there will be 129 players that have been able to play in this event, but only four have been siblings. No sisters have ever been put together on the same team, and the Kordas sisters are hoping to change this.
10. Lexi Thompson Wins ShopRite LPGA Classic
Nine years after she debuted, Lexi Thompson went down in LGPA history as a champion when she shot an eagle to win the 2019 ShopRite LPGA Classic. She also beat U.S. Women’s Open champion Jeongeun Lee6 by one stroke with this shot.
